GLP-1 Side Effects: What to Expect & How to Manage Them
GLP-1 medications like Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) and Wegovy® (semaglutide) are powerful tools for weight management and blood sugar control. But like any treatment, they can come with side effects — especially in the first few weeks or when increasing your dose.
The good news? Most side effects are manageable, short-lived, and often a sign your body is adjusting.
💬 Common Side Effects
These are the most frequently reported side effects with GLP-1 treatments:
- Nausea
- Bloating or gas
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Indigestion or reflux
- Mild loss of appetite (expected effect)
These usually ease within a few days or weeks as your body gets used to the medication.
Less Common, But Important to Know
- Vomiting – usually occurs if you eat too quickly or too much.
- Injection site irritation – redness or itching is possible but often settles.
- Dizziness – may happen early on; stay hydrated and rise slowly.
- Gallbladder issues – like gallstones, especially if weight loss is rapid.
If you ever feel concerned about a side effect, speak to your prescriber or pharmacist.
Rare But Serious: When to Seek Urgent Help

Severe stomach pain that won’t go away
→ Could be a sign of pancreatitis, a rare but serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.
If you feel pain in the region in the picture that wont go away and is getting worse then seek urgent help. Its uncommon and only occurs in 0.5% of users. You just need to be aware that this is a possibility.
- Severe dehydration from ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea
→ Important to rehydrate and seek medical help. - Sudden changes in vision, mood, or heart rate
→ Always report anything unusual or alarming.
Top Tips to Minimise Side Effects
- Start low, go slow
Don’t rush dose increases — let your body adjust. - Eat small, balanced meals
Avoid greasy, heavy, or sugary foods. - Stay hydrated
Sip water throughout the day, especially if you feel nauseous. - Avoid lying down straight after meals
This helps reduce reflux and bloating. - Time your injections consistently
Stick to the same day each week to create a routine.
💡 Remember: Side Effects Are Temporary
For most people, side effects settle as your body adapts. They don’t mean the medication isn’t working — in fact, some (like reduced appetite) are signs that it is.
You deserve to feel your best on your journey to better health. If anything feels off, talk to your healthcare provider — they can help you adjust your plan.
