Slow Down, Champ: Alcohol and GLP-1s Don’t Mix Well.
When you’re on a journey to better health—especially one supported by a GLP-1 treatment like Mounjaro® or Wegovy®—every choice matters. That includes what’s in your glass.
Whether it’s a casual glass of wine or a Friday night G&T, alcohol might seem harmless. But if you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, it’s worth taking a closer look at how drinking could affect your progress—and your body.
GLP-1s and Alcohol: A Tougher Mix Than You Think
GLP-1 medications help regulate appetite, blood sugar, and even slow down digestion. That’s great news for your goals—but alcohol pulls in the other direction. Here’s why it might be time to press pause on the prosecco:
- Increased nausea and vomiting – GLP-1s can cause stomach upset. Alcohol can make it worse.
- Strain on your pancreas – Both alcohol and GLP-1s are processed through your pancreas. When combined, the strain may increase, raising the (rare) risk of inflammation, or pancreatitis.
- Unpredictable blood sugar – Alcohol lowers blood sugar, while GLP-1s help regulate it. Together? They could send your levels swinging in the wrong direction.
- Slower weight loss – Alcohol is full of empty calories and can increase cravings—especially unhelpful if you’re trying to build healthier habits.
Know the Warning Signs
If you begin to experience sudden or severe stomach pain, persistent nausea or vomiting, or pain that spreads to your back, stop drinking alcohol immediately. These could be early signs of pancreatitis, and you should seek medical help straight away.
Also, watch for signs of dehydration, which can increase strain on your system. A key one? Dark urine—your body may be telling you it needs more fluids.
