Understanding oral GLP-1 treatment

What are oral GLP-1 tablets?

GLP-1 medicines are treatments that help support weight management by acting on appetite, fullness and food intake.

Until recently, GLP-1 weight-loss treatment has mainly been available as injections. Wegovy® tablets contain semaglutide and offer a once-daily oral option for suitable adults.

Wegovy® tablets are prescription-only medicines. A prescriber will need to review your consultation before deciding whether treatment is suitable for you.
How treatment supports weight management

How do Wegovy® tablets work?

Wegovy® tablets contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 medicine that helps support weight management by acting on appetite, fullness and food intake.

Helps reduce appetite

GLP-1 treatment can help reduce hunger signals, making it easier for suitable patients to manage calorie intake.

Helps you feel fuller

Semaglutide can help increase feelings of fullness after eating, which may support smaller portions and better eating habits.

Supports long-term change

Wegovy® tablets are used alongside diet and physical activity to support weight loss and weight maintenance.

Wegovy® tablets are not a quick fix. They work best when taken correctly and combined with sustainable lifestyle changes.
Tablets vs injections

How do oral GLP-1 tablets compare with injections?

Oral GLP-1 tablets and injectable GLP-1 treatments can both support weight management, but they are taken in different ways. The right option depends on suitability, medical history, routine and prescriber assessment.

Oral GLP-1 tablets

  • Taken as a tablet once daily.
  • No injection device or needle needed.
  • May suit patients who prefer tablets.
  • Needs to be taken carefully around food, drink and other oral medicines.

GLP-1 injections

  • Usually taken as an injection once weekly.
  • May suit patients who prefer less frequent dosing.
  • Does not usually require the same daily fasting routine.
  • Requires comfort with using an injection pen.

What do the weight loss results show?

Novo Nordisk clinical trial data shows strong weight-loss results for both Wegovy® tablets and weekly Wegovy® injections. These figures come from different studies, so they should not be treated as a direct tablet-versus-injection comparison.

Wegovy® tablets 25 mg daily

Up to 16.6%

Average body weight loss over 64 weeks when oral semaglutide 25 mg was taken as intended in Novo Nordisk clinical trial data.

The wider trial analysis showed 13.6% average weight loss, compared with 2.2% with placebo.

Wegovy® injection 2.4 mg weekly

~15%

Average body weight loss shown in major weekly semaglutide injection trials over around 68 weeks.

Weekly injections remain a strong evidence-based option for suitable adults who prefer weekly dosing.

The 16.6% figure reflects participants taking treatment as intended in Novo Nordisk OASIS 4 trial data for oral semaglutide 25 mg over 64 weeks. The wider trial analysis showed 13.6% average weight loss. Trial results are averages, individual results vary, and the tablet and injection studies were not the same trial.

Different routines. Strong evidence for both.

💊

Oral GLP-1 tablets

Needles: No needles
Best for: People who prefer a tablet and can follow a daily routine

GLP-1 injections

How taken: Injection using a pen

The key difference: it is not just “which works best”. It is which option is clinically suitable and which routine you can follow consistently.
Dosage journey

Your Wegovy® tablet journey

Wegovy® tablets are usually started at a low daily dose and increased step by step. This gradual approach helps your body adjust while your prescriber reviews suitability and tolerance.

Month 1
1.5mg

Starting dose

Treatment begins with a low daily dose to help your body get used to oral semaglutide.

Month 2
4mg

First increase

If suitable, the dose is increased as part of the planned step-up schedule.

Month 3
9mg

Building dose

Your prescriber will consider tolerance, side effects and clinical suitability before continuing.

Month 4 onwards
25mg

Maintenance dose

The 25mg daily dose is the ongoing dose used for weight management where clinically appropriate.

How does the journey start? Complete your online consultation first. A prescriber will review your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Wegovy® tablets are suitable.

Do not increase your dose unless instructed to do so. Treatment suitability, dose progression and ongoing prescribing depend on your consultation, tolerance, side effects and prescriber assessment.

Check your BMI

Could oral GLP-1 treatment be suitable for you?
